I am building a house and will be using hardwoods both inside and outside, and need the best protection for the wood consistent with keeping the natural colour. I think that wood stains might alter the colour too much, but will an oil such as tung or linseed protect the wood from UV degradation and greying, or is my only option to use a varnish with UV filters, such as a marine varnish? I am in a salty environment close to the coast so, though I expect to maintain the finish regularly, I would like to keep this as simple as possible.
